Q: What are “72 dpi”? And why should I care?
A: “72 dpi” refer to the amount of data per line on a picture. A typical photo from your camera is over 1,000 dpi. A large picture would slow down the web, so a special web program takes out all the data related to printing this picture and makes it 72 dpi to comply with web site requirements. Our monitors (such as TV sets) are set to make 72 dpi look the same as a 1,000, so we can not tell the difference until we print it. We need 300 dpi to produce commercial printing. All home versions of image programs are set to 72 dpi as a default. Submission of projects with 72 dpi has to be completely redone. A professional graphic artist’s first lesson is NOT to do this.
Bleed means the background colour extends beyond the cut marks
Q: What is bleed?
A: Usually your print job is on a printing press with six other jobs being printed at the same time. This “ganging up” of jobs bring us quality work at a reduced cost. Once printed this large sheet has to cut up and assembled into your CD job. This equipment has tolerance of + or – 1/8 of an inch. That is to say your paper may not be cut exactly as you have asked but rather within a range. So it is important to adjust your artwork to keep important information away from the edges and extend the background out 1/8 inch beyond where we expect it to end. Submitting a job without bleed tells us that you have missed rule # 3 in the professional graphic artist handbook!
Restriction of time used
Graphic artists have an acceptable standard for how much time is used to do tasks. If you use more time than normal, expect to pay more. .
Scan / formatting a colour picture – 20 min = $15.00
Editing and or cleaning up a picture – $75.00 per hr. (minimum $30.00)
Place and formatting text – 20 min = $15.00
Scanning and typing in new text – $35.00 per h (min $15.00)
The Role Of The Graphic Artist
You are the art director; we are the computer nerds that are going to fulfill your vision. However, your vision may cost more money that you may want to spend, so here’s a guideline for both of us.
As Graphic Artists we scan pictures, place text and convert the digital files to the plant’s requirements. We send an e-mail proof to you, and will make minor corrections.Graphic Artist do not (unless you paying the big bucks) create logos, draw pictures, illustrate, and take pictures. Please submit quality photos of yourself, a logo penned by a band mate, or your concept (an idea that has been turned into something I can scan). As you would know computers don’t do great art from scratch!
